First, it is the mass marketing that they enjoy and dont we love free stuff.
2nd they will keep the functionality to the bare minimum and will definitely have a paid version for you to upgrade to.
Taking note that only home users can enjoy much of free services. Take the case of AVG the agreement is you are not allow to use the free version in a business environment.
So if techie guys uses it at home and thinks it is good it will be recommended to business and there you have a business model.
