When You’re Buying Something, What Formula Can One Use To Decipher The Discounts?

I learned all this in school. However, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to determine 20-80% off of a certain item. Please help me remember.

The easiest way to calculate discounts is:
When you see an item, 10% of the price is just slide the decimal 1 place to the left. To calculate multiples, multiply that new number by whatever factor the discount is. 40% means multiply that number by 4, 80% is 8 etc. THEN you subtract that number from the original price.
TFTP

Sale price = Original price – percent of discount
Example
Sale price = $30 – 5% off
= $30 – 0.05(30)
= $30 – $1.50 = $28.50
Example
$40 = original price – 20% off
$40 = x – 0.20x
$40 = 0.8x
x = $50

the discount is not offered from the cost price but simply a margin is deducted from the sale price.
