That is a popular misconception but sadly I have yet to find that when I was shopping on-line for tickets to Malaysia. It depends on your destination and season. The peak season holiday destinations are still expensive and the travel agents know that you’ll be booking early to avoid disappointment. It is a gamble to wait till the very last minute hoping for cheap air fares from booking cancellations. And I think it is silly to book so well in advance for holidays just in case something unavoidable crops up.
And even a few days difference in flight dates can throw your budget way off. Flights to Malaysia varied between £50pp depending on the waiting time for your connection at Dubai! And in the end my flight to Malaysia cost me £650pp in July. 3 years ago I bought my tickets for £495pp around the same season.
I tried doing that whole on-line price comparison and it did my head it. I got more stressed by the minute as the price quotations deferred, increased, 3 connections (!), dodgy airlines and 10hour transits in the middle of no where. I gave up in the end and called my previous travel agent.
Airlines and travel agencies are trying to recoup their loses and also to make as much as they can. Airlines don’t want to fly half-full so they are cutting back on flight frequency hence you are finding it more difficult in finding seats. For many still popular routes it will remain the same twice daily or twice weekly flights as Airlines do not want to lose their landing rights. But when they have to cut down on flight frequency then to make it more economical the Airlines will either change their Aircraft type (more economical) or go combi (convert the layout to have more cargo in the hold or just behind the end of economy class).
That is why Airlines are also more strict on passenger baggage limit. The credit crunch has affected almost every industry there is. Airlines are cutting back in any way they can, they are putting on hold the purchase of new planes, are leasing their older existing planes, selling their older planes to raise funds, cutting back on new recruitment and staff. So if they are doing major cost cutting I don’t think we will benefit much from this at the moment.
Due to global recession, job losses, reduction in income, etc. the travel industry is going through a tough time. Some air tickets are available with a discount of 60% to 70%, if you book early. In India, air tickets are sold for Rs 0 + taxes & fees payable to the government, on some routes. They just don’t want to fly empty planes!

Well, since in the US our economy arrow is going down, airlines are cutting flights for one thing. Their budget is going down also. So I believe that to save some more money, airlines would decrease discounts, so that they can earn the extra money.
